The world‘s first Riesling winery Wine has been grown at Schloss Johannisberg for 1200 years, and exclusively Riesling since 1720. This is the cradle of one of the oldest and noblest grape varieties in the world. Schloss Johannisberg's long history has given rise to a passion, responsibility and pride in producing an outstanding Riesling and inspiring people to enjoy it. 50 hectares in size, facing due south. A quartzite hill in front of the Taunus massif. With an inclination of 45 degrees, the hill extends up to 182 meters above sea level and offers the grapes perfect sunlight. Schloss Johannisberg's terroir combined with our passion for top quality is the basis for exceptional wines! The 50th parallel runs through the middle of the Schloss Johannisberg vineyard. It stands for the ideal geographical location for Riesling. The large differences between daytime and night-time temperatures help to develop the aromatic and flavorful components of the Riesling grapes. Barrels from Johannisberg castle oak To the north of Johannisberg lies the approximately 300-hectare Schlosswald forest. The wood from the oak trees that grow here serves as the raw material for the wine barrels that we use to make wine. The natural characteristics of the wood, its structure and ingredients promote the character and quality of our top Riesling. Bibliotheca subterranea At the heart of the underground castle cellar is the famous treasure trove of Schloss Johannisberg - the 'Bibliotheca Subterranea'. More than 25,000 precious wines are stored in the 900-year-old abbey cellar. The conditions here are ideal for maturing our valuable wines for centuries. The oldest wine dates back to 1748.
