Who doesn't dream of one day realising their long-cherished dream? For Urban Kaufmann from Switzerland, this was the vision of his own winery. So he travelled through some of the best European wine-growing regions to find the ideal place for his dream of owning his own winery. During his search, he met Eva Raps, the long-standing managing director of the VDP, who brought him to Hans Lang in the Rheingau. After 40 years of passion for winemaking, the seasoned Rheingau winegrower wanted to hand over his life's work to someone with the right instincts to continue it. And so it is that in this extraordinary project, an excellent vineyard portfolio, the search for new things and craftsmanship go hand in hand with the eternal values of the Rheingau. Kaufmann's partner Eva Raps is no stranger to the German wine scene. She has been the dedicated managing director of the Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates (VDP) for many years. "It's a great experience for me to finally implement the VDP's quality philosophy in my own winery," says Eva Raps, "and luckily we have exactly the right portfolio of sites here." The new Hattenheim team is not only dedicated to the Rheingau classic Riesling, but also to the Pinot family around Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris and especially Pinot Noir, with which the winery has been causing a stir in Germany for over twenty years.
