Wines with roots, soul, and serious slope cred — meet Weingut Axel Pauly. Perched above the Mosel in the village of Lieser, this family‑run estate farms some of the region’s most dramatic steep‑slope vineyards, including the prestigious Niederberg‑Helden and its prized parcel, the Bärlay. For Axel Pauly, winemaking is equal parts tradition and fresh perspective. After honing his skills in the Palatinate, Rheingau, France, California, and New Zealand, he returned home to carry forward the legacy of his grandfather and father — with his own clear vision: wines that are pure, precise, and full of life. Look closely at any bottle and you’ll see three faces in profile — his grandfather’s, his father’s, and Axel’s — a subtle nod to the generations who’ve worked these slate slopes. Today, Axel crafts mostly Riesling, alongside Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, and other varieties, all vinified in stainless steel to capture the Mosel’s signature clarity and freshness. In 2014, the rebuilt winery unveiled a modern wine cellar so striking it was named one of Germany’s 50 most beautiful by the German Wine Institute. But beyond the architecture, it’s the wines that speak: light yet complex, crisp yet generous, unmistakably Pauly. Come taste what steep slope pride, slate soils, and a whole lot of heart can do.
