Located between Saint-Guilhem le Désert and Aniane at the heart of the appellation Terrasses du Larzac, Château Capion is widely regarded as one of the rising stars in the firmament of Languedoc wine estates.
On more than 77 hectares of exceptional terroir in the Gassac valley, the vineyard benefits from a wonderful diversity of soils: limestone principally but also sandstone, clay, pebbles, and silt from the sands and terraces. Working extensively with soil specialist Claude Bourguignon, who has detailed the characteristics of each plot through precise mapping (as if it were a mini-terroir), has led to a far greater understanding of the estate’s geological variations. This, in turn, informs how to orient the wine-growing work accordingly with the aim of producing premium wines that are quintessentially of place.
In this quest for provenance, for terroir-driven wines of excellence, Château Capion has also collaborated with other experts, notably internationally-renowned winemaker Claude Gros. Taking advantage of the estate’s extraordinary soil diversity, Gros has introduced a new method of micro-plot production: the grapes from each plot are harvested separately and then vinified in a dedicated vat. This not only allows for the preservation and enhancement of each varietal’s specific characteristics, but also to better select the best fruits according to their origin in the vineyard. In addition, he uses the most modern winemaking and ageing techniques to maintain quality standards.
Château Capion attaches great importance to respect for the environment. The estate has been certified organic since 2020, and the harvest is carried out entirely by hand – in fact, all the work carried out at the vine is done by hand: disbudding at the heart of the stumps, manual trellising, inter-core work, decompacting the fruit area…
It is in large part thanks to this painstaking work that Château Capion has garnered rave reviews from consumers and critics alike for its multi award-winning wines. The estate recently achieved the highest score ever given to a Languedoc white wine in the history of the Decanter World Wine Awards (98 points). And its reds are not to be outdone: the benchmark magazine Wine Advocate has awarded Capion cuvées scores of up to 96 points.
Rarely, the estate produces both red and white wines for ageing. The reds of Château Capion labelled AOP Terrasses du Larzac are synonymous with power, voluptuousness and complexity; the whites (AOP Languedoc) stand out for their captivating subtlety and balance
